Hi, I’m Lee.

The mimosa tree in the sideyard of the first house I ever lived in sparked my initial sense of inquiry and wonder. Touching the leaves and seeing them close up with the lightest stroke of a finger ignited a flurry of “why"s and “how”s that laid the foundation for a lifelong journey into science.

Playing school with my cousins during the summers we spent at my grandparents’ house in rural New Mexico was my first taste of teaching. Little did I know that this childhood game would eventually evolve into my passion. I am fortunate to have turned that passion into a career that I love.

Throughout my teaching career, I have made it my mission to foster a supportive community for fellow biology educators, especially for those who do not have one. I know what it is to be the only teacher in a building or district teaching the subject they teach. I know how difficult it is to work in complete isolation when a PLC is what is needed. My experiences as the sole teacher of a subject at the state’s largest high school led me to establish the first version of The Biology Space back in 2009 when it was only a Google Site for my students.

Now in its 15th year, I hope that The Biology Space can provide you with resources you can use to teach AP Biology, or any other biology course you might teach.
